Washington will be a better town without the Lane operation. I hope this blog will create some good discussion on how to create alternatives to big noisy operations in our town.

Instead of bird songs every morning I now hear the back-up beepers of trucks working on site preparation for Lane. As I travel to the village and back I pass signs warning of trucks entering Vanner Road. It still takes me by surprise when I come around the corner below the Vanner Farm and see the huge entrance road being bulldozed and graded into the Lane site. The scale is so out of proportion to the surrounding residential and rural landscape. At night the large reflector signs at the proposed entrance disrupt my quiet drive home.
The changes sited above are just a beginning. If we do not resist this quarry and industrial site, our environment will be forever damaged and our resources carted away to other towns. Lane's invasion of our town is not inevitable. We can prevail in our determination to stop large scale mining and industry in our farm and forest districts!

The best way for the people of Washington to keep their town rural and to bring in the types of development which are compatible with what most people want is to become active at the local level. If a lot of people get involved in the future of the town, rather than just a few then the development that occurs will be more likely to reflect what we want

I was saddened to hear the Lane finally got what they wanted...it goes to show you big business and $$$ will eventually overcome any obsticals...to be honest the writing was on the wall all they did was wait, wait, and wait a little longer and opposition finally went away, it truly is a shame.

Lane, Lane go away. In order to preserve the rural aspects of the town of Washington, farming should be encouraged. Wine grape vineyards ars starting to pop up here and there and the local organic farms are producing more sellable foods. The wonderful farmer's market sponsored by the Grange needs to be cultivated and patronized. There is lots of hope for this beautiful town and lots of room for environmentally friendly growth. In the future, this is the place that the rest of the country will envy because of its loveliness. It is a diamond in the rough.
